Description

Santa Marta churchSanta Marta´s Church is located in the very centre of the town. Unfortunately, the few things that we know about the old church are that it already existed in 1619 and that on the 21st of December 1595 it obtained permission to celebrate mass. In 1730, as the small oratory was declared unfit for use, the plan for a new larger church was given to the local architect Costanzo Michela.

The outside structure is not based upon the inner area, as it finds its logic in the connection to the environmental context.

Its refined simplicity is given by the Piedmont bricks, enriched by polychrome glazed terracotta ceramic produced in Castellamonte. Compared to the local tradition, here the bricks become a blast of colours: the concave fa?ade is characterized by curved and flat surfaces, which create a full-empty and light-shadow effect, the volutes standing out against it. The left side of the church is enriched by the triangular steeple, built in 1787 by Giuseppe Domenico Morano based on project of the Architect Michela.

In the interior it is possible to admire the white plaster, which is not just a decorative motif but, together with the wooden sculpture and the furniture, becomes a sort of architectural element - a quite unusual characteristic in Italian culture, seen more in Spanish architecture.

The great freedom of the style is also evident in the unbroken combination of curved lines, which divides the inner space into well defined limits: an area for the congregation with two altars, the tribune for the choir, the presbytery, the tribune for the church members, the sacristy, the wonderful choir loft of carved wood, which leads off to two short semi elliptical flights of steps. The furniture is part of the architecture as well. Noteworthy, in particular, is the central icon representing our Lady of the Assumption, St. Marta with the dragon (the symbol of the saint, which you also find columns decorated with ornamental chains in the choir loft).

It is worth seeing the reproduction work of the Holy Shroud, by the noted artist Fantinus, that dates back to 1708.
